Learn English Lesson #1 (Read + Speak + Study Questions)

British Columbia’s (BC) first Internet gambling site opened with such popularity that the system crashed. Debuting with 100% capacity, the website offered $10 free gambling money to anyone wanting to try the new site. The overwhelming response to this new measure caused the servers to overload; new servers are currently being installed to accommodate the increased traffic. Because of the installation, the site is temporarily offline. Proponents of online gambling include the government who expect to receive $100 million annually from the new gambling venture. Critics of the move suggest the website is luring people to the website with free money only to get them addicted to gambling. Conversely, the website is possibly less luring than casinos already in operation; casinos offer free alcohol and a ‘groovy’ atmosphere which can be far more luring than $10 free gambling money. One thing is certain: Teacher Phil is not gambling on the Internet!

Questions:
What to proponents of online gambling think of this website?
They think the website is good for revenue.
Who do you think would criticize online gambling?
Parents, teachers, Libertarians,
Name four things that can be described as ‘groovy’.
Groovy music
Groovy cars
Groovy movies
Groovy chicks
Why did they shut down the website temporarily?
The new servers are being installed.
Make a sentence with an alternate use of the word ‘lure’.
I used my fishing lure to catch a salmon.
I used my fishing fly to lure in a salmon.
What is the converse of ‘online’?
The converse of online is offline.

U.S. jobless claims explode to yearly high

More Americans are out of work this year according to the Labor Bureau. As American production continues to be shipped offshore and the government takes over the economy, more Americans have free time to spend their welfare checks. “I love Obama,” said Michael Johnson, who lost his banking job in 2005. “Five years ago I worked, which was hard. For the last five years, the government puts money in my bank account and I can go to the beach instead.” Economists are worried that the lack of jobs will lead to a crisis. But local Californian mayor Shawn Oldron countered, “Californians are reaping the benefits of expanded government welfare programs. We no longer have to work; yet we all get paid and have a year-round vacation. What better way to live in the sunny paradise of California?” Alas, there is a dark side to this utopia. Jennifer Crimson, who lost her retail job in 1995 has been out of work since. “Being out of work is difficult and dangerous. I always receive my welfare check on time, but often I fall asleep at the beach and I suffer massive sunburn. Often, I must go to the hospital and they refer me to a day spa. Fortunately, the government pays for that too. I deserve it too. I haven’t been able to find work in 15 years. I applied at all of the law offices to become a lawyer but they said I didn’t graduate high school. That’s just the reality in America; you can’t find a job once you’ve lost the one you had. Similarly, Jennifer lost her boyfriend in 1995 and hasn’t been able to find a replacement. A website has been set up to raise funds for Jennifer, who has 5 fish to support as well as a gambling habit that costs an extra $450 per day.

Questions:
Describe the employment situation in America today.

What are the benefits of unemployment?

Jennifer Crimson wants a boyfriend. Write a paragraph introducing yourself. Include hobbies, interests, physical characteristics (what do you look like?) and your line of work (job).

How to Recognize the Signs of Compulsive Gambling

Expand the description and view the text of the steps for this how-to video.

Compulsive gambling is a recognized addiction, just like alcoholism or chemical dependency. Follow these steps to see if you might fit the profile.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A willingness to evaluate yourself
Honesty

Step 1: Recognize the number one red flag

Recognize the number one red flag, which is that you are taking valuable time away from your job and your family to gamble.

Step 2: Evaluate your financial situation

Evaluate your financial situation. Are you borrowing or even stealing money in order to gamble? Has your gambling resulted in bounced checks and credit card debt?

Step 3: Uncover hidden meanings

Uncover the hidden meanings of your actions. If you’re secretive about your gambling or if you lie about it, you are tacitly acknowledging that you have a problem. If you’ve tried to cut back or quit, you know that you do.

Tip: If you have children, it’s doubly important to get help. Research shows that 50 percent of the children of pathological gamblers eventually become compulsive gamblers themselves.

Step 4: Assess your feelings

Assess your feelings. Do you feel guilty and remorseful after you gamble? Do you gamble to distract yourself from problems or to relieve anxiety — the way someone else might rely on drugs or alcohol?

Step 5: Face escalating behavior

Look back on your gambling history. Do you have to keep increasing the amounts you bet in order to achieve the same high?

Step 6: Ask yourself

Ask yourself if you fit the profile casinos use to scope out problem gamblers: They play longer than three hours, are prone to outbursts, and make frequent trips to the ATM machine.

Step 7: Gauge your optimism

Gauge your optimism. Considering the odds against you, are your expectations of winning unreasonably high? Irrational optimism is another sign of gambling addiction.

Step 8: Get help

If any of the preceding descriptions apply to you, get help for your addiction — before you lose your family, your friends, your job, your financial security, and maybe even your freedom.

She sewed my new blue jeans,
And my father was a gambling man,

Is when he’s all a-drunk.

Not to do what I have done,
Dont spend your life in sin and misery,

And another on that train,
And I’m going back to New Orleans,
