God of Gamblers (traditional Chinese: ??; simplified Chinese: ??; pinyin: D?shén; lit. God of Gambling) is a 1989 Hong Kong action comedy-drama film written and directed by Wong Jing, and featuring an ensemble cast.
Chow Yun-Fat plays Ko Chun, an extremely talented gambler who can guess how the dice will turn out by listening to them rattle in a cup. On the eve of a big confrontation with a famous Singaporean gambler, Ko walks into a trap set by Knife, an avid but a so-so gambler (Andy Lau), meant for an Indian servant. Struck on the head, Ko suffers from amnesia and regresses to a child-like state. Knife, not knowing who Ko is, takes him in and gives him a name, Chocolate, since Ko now has an over-obsessive love for chocolate. As soon as he recognizes Ko’s talents begins to exploit his abilities. This invites further trouble and trauma for Ko leading up to a big finale. Ko’s bodyguard Dragon arrives after tracking him down to protect him from thugs who tried to kill him. After a fierce gun-battle in which Ko killed all his enemies, he became horrified and ran out into the street where he was struck by a vehicle. Moments later at the hospital, Knife came to visit him only to learn Ko have no memory of him and was thrown out by security to his dismay. Meanwhile, Ko Chun’s driver helps the Singaporean gambler by giving him glasses that can see dots on cards (which tells him if it’s a King, Queen, Jack,or Ace). During the big showdown, Ko Chun loses 2 rounds and during the last round, fools the Singaporean gambler thus winning all of the money. Then, the Singaporean gambler is sent to jail because he misunderstandingly shot Ko Chun’s driver. In the end, Ko Chun remembers Knife and takes him to Las Vegas to gamble.

[edit] Sequels, spin-offs and parodies
The success of the film spawned many parodies and spin-offs such as All for the Winner starring Stephen Chow. Several more comedy-driven sequels also starring Stephen Chow were released, as well as a sequel where Chow Yun-Fat reprises his role as Ko Chun.
God of Gamblers series:
* God of Gamblers (1989)
* God of Gamblers II (1991) – This film continues where the original God of Gamblers storyline left off. This time, Andy Lau’s character teams up with Stephen Chow’s character from All for the Winner. Chow Yun-Fat did not return for this film, but his God of Gambler character did show up for a brief cameo appearance using archive footage.
* God of Gamblers III: Back To Shanghai (1991) – The film is the sequel to God of Gamblers II. Only several characters from God of Gamblers II returned for this sequel.
* God of Gamblers Returns (1994) – Also released under the name God of Gamblers 2 (but not God of Gamblers II) this is the ‘true’ sequel to the original God of Gamblers film, with Chow Yun-Fat back to reprise his role as the God of Gamblers.
* God of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage (1996) – A markedly unsuccessful prequel of the original God of Gamblers, starring Leon Lai as Ko Chun. It may be assumed that this is a reboot to the God of Gamblers series because of the inconsistencies with the previously established story of God of Gamblers e.g. Ko Chun and his bodyguard, meet for the very first time in the first film and therefore should not know each other in this prequel.
Spin-offs:
* All for the Winner (1990) – Stephen Chow is the Saint of Gamblers in this popular God of Gamblers parody.
* Fist of Fury 1991 (1991) – Stephen Chow’s Saint of Gamblers character does a brief cameo appearance at the start of this film.
* The Top Bet (1991) – This is a spin-off of All for the Winner, with only several characters from the original reprising their role. Stephen Chow did, however, make a cameo appearance in this spin-off. The film stars Anita Mui and Carol Cheng.
* Fight Back to School 3 (1993) – Stephen Chow’s character visits Mr. Hung, the ‘King of Gamblers’ from All for the Winner to gain some Gambling tips.
* Saint of Gamblers (1996) – A spin-off of the All for the Winner series, with only Ng Man-Tat reprising his role.

“Whether it’s in a casino or online, poker and other games of chance are becoming increasingly popular. It’s not just men who are addicted, a growing number of women are becoming compulsive gamblers, too. Early Show correspondent Hattie Kauffman takes a closer look at the troubling trend,” news anchor.
“The reality is the longer you gamble compulsively, which is what I was doing, the more you become a compulsive liar,” Melanie Morgan, former gambling addict.
“In the 1980s Melanie Morgan was a successful television anchor until her gambling addiction cost her, her job and nearly destroyed her marriage,” Hattie Kauffman, CBS national correspondent.
“I would lie about where I was going, what I was doing, who I was with, how much money I was spending,” Melanie Morgan.
“Even her pregnancy did not stop Melanie from gambling,” Hattie Kauffman.
“Of course I was in a terrible environment, smoke-filled rooms, hardly taking care of myself. I was gambling until an hour before I gave birth,” Melanie Morgan.
“After her son was born, she often left the infant with an assortment of babysitters,” Kauffman.
“I remember packing up the baby one day and driving around to each of the card rooms where I thought she might be and finally locating her and taking the baby in its carrier and putting the baby in the middle of the poker table and saying, ‘You got a choice. You want to play cards or you want to be a Mom?’” Jack Morgan, Melanie’s husband.
“I knew at that point I was in desperate trouble and I knew I was sick, sick, and needed help. And I still didn’t want to stop,” Melanie Morgan.
“You might think the opportunity to gamble non-stop would be limited to a trip to Las Vegas or Atlantic City, but the temptation is everywhere. Visit here in Phoenix and you’ll be greeted with the Arizona Casino guide, listing 22 casinos, dog racing, horse racing, bingo and more,” Kauffman.
“I won $10,000 playing bingo. It just hooks you right in,” former compulsive gambler.
“Slot machines,” another compulsive gambler.
“Mine wasn’t slots, it was draw poker,” another compulsive gambler.
“I sat down with three women in recovery from compulsive gambling: Shannon, Freda, and Vicki,”
“Do you have any idea how much you’ve lost to gambling?” Kauffman.
“I’ve lost $300,000. It was all of my retirement money,” Vicki.
“I have thought it was around $35,000 but my husband has stated that it’s around $50,000,” Shannon.
“It was around $115,000 to $200,000,” Freda.
“But Freda lost a lot more than that. She lost a year of her life when she went to prison after stealing cash to gamble,” Kauffman.
“The sick compulsive gambler will do whatever they have to do to gamble,” Freda.
“It makes me think about a drug addict who steals to get the drugs,” Kauffman.
“It’s an addiction. It is an addiction,” Freda.
“Psychologist Paul Good says that it used to be women used to gamble to escape their every day life, but now more are being lured simply by the action,” Kauffman.
“A sense of excitement, of being on the edge. You are literally holding your fate in your own hands at a poker table. For a women, that could be a powerful riveting experience,” Paul Good, psychologist.
“Is it a high? Is it a euphoria?” Kauffman.
“Oh yes. Oh yes it is. It’s like a drug,” Freda.
“Especially when you hear the bells ringing,” background voice.
“According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, in the 1980s just a handful of women sought treatment for gambling addiction. Today, almost half of those seeking help for Gambling addiction are female,” Kauffman.
“You are going to see gambling take its place alongside alcoholism and drug abuse as being one of the most significant addictions of our time,” Paul Good, Psychologist.

In this clip from God of Gamblers, the main character wins a game of dice through what may be called superhuman ability or cheating. It is not merely supernatural luck, though that may play a part in it.
In the Asian gambling genre, “cheating” is just another word for “really good at gambling.” It’s a totally different outlook than found in American gambling films like Rounders or The Color of Money. American gambling films, though they may feature larcenous characters, seem preoccupied with fairness and morality, whereas the Asian films embrace life, unfairness and immorality included. The Asian Gambling films seem to say, “Yes, the game is rigged. But that’s gamble. That’s life. And it’s wonderful.”
