Michigan Indian Casino Without Gambling

The new Indian casino, the $36 million Kewadin Shores Casino and Hotel is sitting on a beautiful location on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is located north of the Macinac Bridge overlooking Lake Huron’s Horseshoe Bay. The hotel-casino complex belongs to the Chippewa Indian tribe which has five other casinos. There are eight hundred slot machines and twenty-six game tables in the 29,000 square foot casino. The hotel opened last June, but the casino didn’t. The problem is gambling is illegal on the land the casino is located on. And because gambling isn’t legal on the land, the casino sits idle.

Needless to say the Chippewa Nation leadership is a little angry about the situation and pointing fingers at each other over who is responsible for the $36 million blunder. The tribe’s former chairman and present chairman blame each other. Only thirty feet of the hotel’s present casino is on land where gambling is illegal. The former chairman knew this when the building was in progress, but the foundation had already been laid. Even though a second survey indicated this fact, the tribe did not change their plans and continued to build the casino. The tribe’s lawyer blames the National Indian Gaming Commission for not ruling on the issue. If the tribe thought the government would give in and allow the casino after the hotel and casino were finished, they were wrong. The result is that the tribe is building another casino near there for a cost of $2.5 million.

How can I be charitable to "the poor" without supporting those in self-imposed poverty?
I am a Catholic and believe in charitable contributions so I regularly give clothing to the Salvation Army. I am contemplating starting to donate money and canned goods to local charities but I have an issue with people in my area abusing these services.
I live in a small town in Northern Michigan with a very high population of impoverished people. We have a large casino operated by the local indian tribe, 90% of them are on welfare, and take advantage of local charities. I just don’t understand this because they definitely have the means to make money. Also, there is a large population of impoverished people who are substance or gambling abusers. They also are on welfare and take advantage of these programs. How can I give without supporting this lifestyle these people have chosen? Isn’t charitable giving just enabling them? Maybe I should just give to a Mother Teresa type charity where the work is in third-world countries?

No where in the Bible does it say only help the worthy…Jesus said what you do for the "least" I wouldn’t worry. Just do your part and give.

substance or gambling abusers are people with a sickness, they are addicted to this "high" that cures them from their unfulfilled life. In helping them without judgement you are leaving it in Gods hands. Their are different types of abusers in Third World countries also. If you stop giving to your local charities you may miss out on helping someone who really needed that sweater!

Why don’t you to organizations like the Lions or if you have a Share program. They make sure the money goes to places or people who truly need the help and aren’t just lazy

That’s a good question and a tough one to answer. I think the best method is to give directly to the people who need it if you know of any personally and perhaps not give cash but cover the need. For example, if someone needs food, you buy them food and not give them cash, that way you know the money is used for the right reason. I gave money to someone I knew was in need, and instead of paying utilities and buying food, they used the cash for beer and cigarettes. I won’t make that mistake again. Good luck!

In addition I would add the Scripture teaches us to be gentle as doves, but also wise as serpents. I don’t think that means that we should knowingly give handouts to someone who is just lazy and doesn’t want to work. If we give help to those who don’t need it, then the people who do need it aren’t getting it. That doesn’t sound too helpful to me.

Wow. I am not sure what to say… do all people need to eat, need warm clothing, need shelter? How can you decide who is really needy and who is not? Perhaps the Native American on welfare is there because they have been spiritually broken their whole life…maybe the dug/ alchohol abuser was raped or molested and has no resources for help and recovery. There but for the grace of God, go I. That could be me out there homeless…that could be you.

Aren’t you also supposed to live by the whole "Judge not lest ye be judged" part of christianity, too? Who are you to judge the "worthiness" of these people? Do you know and understand all of their lives and situations? Even if they are living in "self-imposed" poverty, what about the children they’re raising? They have no say in where their parent’s money goes to. Can it really be called "charity" if you impose a bunch of restrictions on it?

You can’t always be sure that only the "deserving" poor will be helped. But, God never qualified which kind of poor he wanted us to help in the Bible. Many of these charities learn how to weed out those who abuse the system of helps. You also need to realise that many of those who get help will be the helpless children or spouse of people who are addicted to drugs or gambling. God said give; let Him do the Judging. He never asked you to determine who needs it, let him weed out any "bums". Why don’t you call around and ask how your local charities prevent abuse of their system. You may be surprised at how they take care of this issue!!!

  14. Gal from Yellow Flat Says:

You probably shouldn’t try to decide on your own who is worthy or not. After all, the largest group of homeless people in the United States are children. Should we withhold from them because their parents have problems?

If you don’t feel comfortable donating money, give clothing, give food, give time. When you do that, you are showing love to those who are hurting.

But if you resent giving, then don’t. God will not bless a resentful giver.

Acting charitably isn’t easy. It’s hard not to judge, and I do think that concerns about enabling people to continue self-destructive behavior have some validity. On the other hand, people who want to be charitable must understand that we can not control what the people who may receive the charity will do. So, for me the first step is to understand that I can not control other people’s choices. I can seek charitable programs that are effective in helping people, and sometimes I can even find programs that help people help themselves. I do not assume that charities in third-world countries are any more effective than charites near home.

Have you considered donating to programs that offer adult literacy classes or adult education? How about parenting classes? Senior centers? Meals on Wheels programs that deliver meals to elderly shut ins? Domestic abuse shelters? Programs aimed at children? Research and Education type charities like the American Heart Association or Arthritus Foundation? Disaster relief and edcation-The American Red Cross?

Although some people who use the services of food banks may abuse ‘the system’, many do not….donating to food banks and to groups like Catholic Social Services still serves a very real need, imo.
