Transcript:President Obama:Seventy-five years ago today, in the midst of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, laying a cornerstone in the foundation of America’s middle class, and assuring generations of America’s seniors that after a lifetime of hard work, they’d have a chance to retire with dignity. We have an obligation to keep that promise; to safeguard Social Security for our seniors, people with disabilities, and all Americans — today, tomorrow, and forever. Now, we’ve been talking for a long time about how to do that; about how to make sure Social Security is healthy enough to cover the higher costs that are kicking in now that baby boomers are retiring. And I’m committed to working with anyone, Democrat or Republican, who wants to strengthen Social Security. I’m also encouraged by the reports of serious bipartisan work being done on this and other issues in the fiscal commission that I set up several months ago. One thing we can’t afford to do though is privatize Social Security — an ill-conceived idea that would add trillions of dollars to our budget deficit while tying your benefits to the whims of Wall Street traders and the ups and downs of the stock market. A few years ago, we had a debate about privatizing Social Security. And I’d have thought that debate would’ve been put to rest once and for all by the financial crisis we’ve just experienced. I’d have thought, after being reminded how quickly the stock market can tumble, after seeing the wealth people worked a lifetime to earn wiped out in a matter of days, that no one would want to place bets with Social Security on Wall Street; that everyone would understand why we need to be prudent about investing the retirement money of tens of millions of Americans. But some Republican leaders in Congress don’t seem to have learned any lessons from the past few years. They’re pushing to make privatizing Social Security a key part of their legislative agenda if they win a majority in Congress this fall. It’s right up there on their to-do list with repealing some of the Medicare benefits and reforms that are adding at least a dozen years to the fiscal health of Medicare — the single longest extension in history. That agenda is wrong for seniors, it’s wrong for America, and I won’t let it happen. Not while I’m President. I’ll fight with everything I’ve got to stop those who would gamble your Social Security on Wall Street. Because you shouldn’t be worried that a sudden downturn in the stock market will put all you’ve worked so hard for — all you’ve earned — at risk. You should have the peace of mind of knowing that after meeting your responsibilities and paying into the system all your lives, you’ll get the benefits you deserve. Seventy-five years ago today, Franklin Roosevelt made a promise. He promised that from that day forward, we’d offer — quote — “some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against&hellippoverty-stricken old age.” That’s a promise each generation of Americans has kept. And it’s a promise America will continue to keep so long as I have the honor of serving as President. Thanks for listening. Thanks for watching. And have a nice weekend.

Maybe someone who’s been in the same position as me, answer ?
Baically i live with my parents, i used to say i was going to go to bla bla wherever, i basically got told where i can/can’t go. When i met a guy i basically got run down your not going near him. Then he moved far, i used to say i was going to get the tran to see him, my parents kept saying your not going. I kept saying every few months thinking things would get better.
I wish i leant my lesson and moved out, but i think my parents telling me what to do go to my head, i listened to them. When my brothers girlfriends were welcomed, i then decided i had no choice but to save and move out.
I spent my time mostly in my room trying to save, i saved £9000
I guess i become so depressed just wanting to be normal like everyone else (have a boyfriend, go places i want to, but my parents dragged me down)
One day i came across a gambling site, i have never believed in gambling, have always thought its more for bored/depressed people, i started playing gamed on the site. I felt it helped take away all the pain of seeing my brothers happy with girls, and not being allowed here or there.
withinn a week of gambling i was 1000 overdrawn (i have never been overdrawn before that) i was always a good saver !
Ever since i just keep gambling when my parents run me down, so i have always been 2000 overdrawn for a while now.
My friend has went on the gambling site and changed my password, so i can’t go on it again.
I just want to hope its a new start for me now. I’m just scared to think what my future is going to be like now. I mean i think it started getting too much when i was 21, most people my age had boyfriends/kids. I’m more worried i have heard people say things like once a gambler, always a gambler. Also is it normal to loose soo much money ? , i mean my friend says shes done gambling for bordom, she says everyone looses money in their life stop worrying just get out more forget your parents. I guess i just have to be carefull shop around try save for now ? I mean i have gambled about 20,000. A year and a half pay. I basically never went out/bought new clothes nothing.
I feel now i used so much money, ill have money worries in my life ? I’m 22 ! I’m always worried about getting a morgage considering i have been overdrawn !
I know people will say you should have moved out, but you don’t know what its like till your in my place, i kind of wish my parents let me go out and make misakes in my life.
thanks to those who answer my money worries
People don’t seem to understand that support is helping people build up the resolve to do what they know they need to do not tell them what they should do or do stuff for them. You’ve been taking the easy safe route through life rather than living it. It was easier to just stay, family and friends were probably telling you to stay home and save. It was easier to simply go along with your parents when they said you couldn’t go out with someone. You have to realize that your parents think they are supporting you by providing shelter and food and that they are protecting you by telling you how to conduct your life but that’s not building you up to have the confidence that you need in life.
Gambling is a symptom of desperation, it’s the thought of one big win will change everything but what needs to change is that you need to have the confidence in yourself to take risks, to go out and do stuff, to go out and live. It’s really not a risk at all as what is there to lose. You need to have the confidence in your own decisions and know that you don’t need your parents permission to go out and make your own mistakes in life.
Think of it this way, trusting in yourself and in your decisions is much less of a gamble than the Gambling that you have been doing. Come up with a plan, write down some objectives, break the tasks down to milestones and go for it one at a time.
